The Toyota Prius, depending on your driving style and conditions, can achieve an outstanding fuel amount of 4.4L/100km, through its Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD), allowing you to use 50% less fuel than that of a similar sized petrol engine. The reduction in fuel consumption also dramatically lowers emissions.
A petrol and electric engine power the Toyota Prius, with the petrol engine driving the front wheels and charging the battery that provides energy for the electric motor. The optimum combination of petrol and electric power is determined by the onboard energy management system, meaning that the vehicle only uses petrol when it needs to, while still driving like a normal vehicle, but provides a quieter, smoother drive.
The Toyota Prius was the first vehicle in Australia to achieve a maximum five star rating in the Australian Government's Green Vehicle Guide using regular unleaded petrol (ULP), and it also has not only met, but has considerably exceeded the strict EURO IV emission standards, and is powered by a 4 cylinder, 16 valve, double overhead cam, 1.5 litre, VVT-i petrol engine and an electric motor.
